Everything you need to know about repeat prescriptions

July 11, 2017

Have you ever made a doctor’s appointment to ask for some more medication, only to be told you could order your medicines on a repeat prescription without having to have an appointment? Did you know you can also order repeat prescriptions online through Evergreen Life, making the whole process quicker and easier? In this article, we’ll look at exactly what a repeat prescription is and how ordering online can make your life easier.

What is a repeat prescription?

When your doctor prescribes you the same medication on an ongoing basis, this is often done with a repeat prescription. This could be a medication for a long-term condition such as high blood pressure. The repeat prescription is an instruction from your doctor that says you can be issued this prescription in the future without having to have an appointment.

How is it different to a normal prescription?

When your doctor gives you a prescription it has a green side and white side. When being given a prescription for a course of medication which you will only take for a short time, such as antibiotics, this will be written on the green side. You give this to your pharmacist and receive your medication – simple.

With a repeat prescription, your doctor wants the medication to be available to you on an ongoing basis, so they write on the white side of the prescription to indicate that this has been set as a repeat prescription. When you hand the green part of the prescription to your pharmacist, you keep the white side and you can use this to request future prescriptions from your doctor without having to book an appointment.

How do I order a repeat prescription?

The good news is, you don’t have to book another GP appointment to get your next prescription, so you don’t have to wait for the next available appointment which could delay your medication.

With the white side of your prescription, you can tick the medication you require and drop it off at your local GP surgery. If you can’t easily make it into your GP practice, you can choose to post repeat prescriptions to your GP – which can take a long time. You also need to make sure your timing is right – it's recommended that you order your repeat prescriptions no later than 5 days before you finish your current prescription.

Order repeat prescriptions online

While you may have always used the white side of your prescription to get your repeat medications, there's now a quick and easy way to do it online. When your doctor marks your medication as a repeat prescription it will automatically be marked as a repeat prescription in your Evergreen Life account. Then, you can simply click and request your next prescription straight from your Evergreen Life app or website – your doctor will receive the request immediately and you can pick up your medications without delays that usually occur when waiting for a doctor to sign off your prescription.
