When to check a mole...

It’s very common to have moles on your body. However, if a mole changes or a new one appears, it’s important to get these checked out by a suitably qualified clinician. Our article below tells you how to spot the warning signs of skin cancer, if you are wondering how to check a mole.

A graphic showing a mole in a magnifying glass on someone's back. The graphic is titled 'Melanoma warning signs' with A for Asymmetry - one half of a mole does not match the other, B for Border - The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred, C for Colour - The mole is not evenly coloured. It may include shades or brown or black, or patches of red or pink, D for Diameter - The spot is larger than 6 millimeters across, and E or Evolving - The mole is changing in size, shape or colour.

It’s normal to have moles on your body. Yet, if one changes or a new one appears, it’s important to get it checked by a qualified clinician.

What do we mean by changes? The ABCDE rule can be a good guide to checking your mole for warning signs of melanoma (a type of skin cancer).

A = Asymmetry – one half of your mole doesn’t match the other.

B = Border – the edges of your mole are blurred, ragged, notched or irregular

C = Colour – your mole isn’t evenly coloured and may feature shades of brown or black or have red or pink patches.

D – Diameter – your mole is bigger than 6 millimeters across.

E – Evolving – your mole’s shape, colour and size is changing.
