How does DNA testing work?

Curious about how DNA testing works? You’re not alone. With the rise of home DNA testing kits, understanding the process behind these tests is more relevant than ever. In this short article, we’ll explore the ins and outs of home DNA testing, including a closer look at Evergreen Life DNA testing.

How does DNA testing work?

DNA testing involves analysing a sample of genetic code by collecting a biological sample. This may be blood, a cheek swab, or saliva. For more on the evolution of DNA testing, check out article on when did DNA testing start?

While the specific steps may vary between companies, here’s a breakdown of how the process works for our users at Evergreen Life:

  1. Sample collection: Within 2 working days of ordering your test through the Evergreen Life website or app, your test kit will be posted to you. After carefully reading the instructions the next step is collecting your sample. With the Evergreen Life’s kit, this involves a simple saliva collection. A small tube with a funnel-like attachment is provided for you to spit into. Only 1ml is needed but it’s important not to eat or drink within 30 minutes of taking the test to avoid contamination. Once you’ve collected your sample following the kit’s instructions, it’s ready to be sent off to the lab.

  2. Analysis at the lab: Once your sample reaches our certified lab, highly trained professionals perform quality assurance testing to ensure there is enough high quality DNA in your sample so that further testing can be performed. Once completed, your DNA is analysed using a method called ‘SNP Genotyping.’ This method focuses on specific points in your DNA known to impact certain traits. Referred to as SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms), these genetic “variants” aid our users in comprehending the adjustments they can undertake to enhance their health and wellbeing.

  3. Interpretation of Results: After the analysis is complete, you’ll receive your results in the Evergreen Life app. You will get a push notification and an email to let you know they’re ready to view. The DNA test provides feedback on five key areas of your health that you can unlock to help you make meaningful lifestyle changes for the better.

Diet. Discover your predisposition to vitamin deficiencies, caffeine metabolism, eating habits, and more, so you can tailor what you eat to suit your genes.

Fitness. What type of exercise is going to get you shedding those lbs or building muscle most effectively?

Metabolism. Find out how your DNA influences your cholesterol, BMI, fat and carb metabolism, and more, so you can reach your health goals.

Skincare. Unlock your skin’s secrets including UV sensitivity and moisture levels, so you can understand how to protect your skin health.

Happiness. Learn how your genes can affect your sleeping patterns, social interactions, optimism, and how you respond to stress – so you can boost your wellbeing.

How long does it take to get results?

This is a common question when it comes to DNA tests. The answer varies depending on the testing provider and the type of test. With the Evergreen Life’s DNA Test, you can expect results delivered straight to your app within 6-8 weeks of sending in your sample. You will also receive an email confirming that the lab has your sample and that they can start their analysis.
